The GMAT rewards structured preparation, and the right tools can help you focus on what the exam actually tests. A single app will not do everything: official practice shows you the real exam, and a study companion keeps your preparation consistent and fills the gaps. This guide ranks six options and explains how to combine them.

The GMAT at a glance (Focus Edition)

The current GMAT is the Focus Edition. Based on GMAC's published information:

Section Questions Time What it covers
Quantitative Reasoning 21 45 minutes Problem solving
Verbal Reasoning 23 45 minutes Critical reasoning and reading comprehension
Data Insights 20 45 minutes Data sufficiency, table analysis, graphics interpretation, multi-source reasoning, two-part analysis

The exam has 64 questions and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. Each section is scored from 60 to 90, and the total score runs from 205 to 805 in 10-point increments, with all three sections counting equally. Candidates can choose the order of the sections, and there is no essay section. Always confirm the current format, fees and rules at mba.com.

How we ranked them

  • Does it help you prepare consistently over weeks?
  • How close is it to the real exam? Official practice is the best guide to real style, difficulty and adaptivity.
  • Does it cover all three sections, including Data Insights?

1. StudyMina: best study companion for GMAT preparation

Best for: applicants who want a consistent plan and on-demand explanations alongside official practice.

StudyMina supports GMAT preparation along with IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, ACT and GRE, and it covers the parts of preparation that practice exams leave to you.

Plan backwards from your test date. Schedule Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights practice, review sessions and timed mock-exam days into a weekly plan so your preparation does not drift.

Why StudyMina is number one for the GMAT. StudyMina is the best app for keeping a GMAT study plan on track: schedule your Quantitative, Verbal and Data Insights sessions, have Mina walk you through every method step by step, and drill your weak topics with quizzes and flashcards built from your own notes and error log. Add GMAC's official practice exams for test-day realism and you have a preparation system that covers everything.

2. GMAT Official Starter Kit and Official Prep: best for realistic practice

GMAC, which owns the GMAT, offers a free Official Starter Kit with practice questions and two full-length practice exams, plus a free study guide, and sells further official preparation. Because these match the real format and scoring, they are the best way to test where you stand. They practise the exam, but do not plan your weeks or explain concepts like a tutor.

3. GMAT Official Guides: best for official practice questions by section

GMAC publishes official guides, including separate volumes for Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights, containing real-style questions. They are reliable and exam-accurate, but they are paid books and not adaptive.

4. Magoosh GMAT: best for lessons and practice

Magoosh is a commercial test-prep company with GMAT lessons and practice questions on a paid subscription. It is not official GMAT material, so use it alongside official practice.

5. e-GMAT: best for structured online courses

e-GMAT is an online GMAT preparation provider with structured courses. It is paid and not official, so check what each plan includes and compare it with the free official materials first.

6. Anki: best for memorising formulas and rules

Anki is a free spaced-repetition flashcard app (desktop, web and Android; the iPhone app is paid). It is excellent for formulas, rules and vocabulary, and it will not teach you GMAT strategy. See spaced repetition.

A simple GMAT app stack

  1. Take an official practice exam first to find your starting point and weak sections.
  2. Use StudyMina to plan your weeks, explain what you get wrong and drill weak topics daily.
  3. Do official practice questions by section regularly and a full official exam every couple of weeks.
  4. Keep an error log and retest your mistakes.

Our 30-day exam study plan and guide to preparing for exams with practice quizzes show how to organise the process.
